How to Fix when Keyboard starts typing randomly after the Windows update?

After a recent Windows 10 update on my machine, it caused the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to behave weirdly.

Symptoms and Impact

After the Windows update, as I started using the Bluetooth keyboard, the mouse's left key started acting like the right key. The keyboard keys started acting randomly.

The issue was problematic and made it impossible to work with an erratic keyboard and mouse.

I tried doing usual troubleshooting actions like Windows restart, keyboard reset, etc. But nothing worked.

Solution

Listing a few of the solutions as I gathered.

The first one worked for me.

Solution 1 — Reset Keyboard

  • Remove Bluetooth keyboard from Windows connected device list
  • Switch off the Windows Bluetooth.
  • Reset the Keyboard. For the IClever keyboard, the key combination is fn + left shift + backspace.
  • Connect again with Windows.

This worked for me.

Hopefully, this should fix the issue. If not, keep reading for more options.

Solution 2— Fix the Registry for Keyboard Layout

  • Open windows registry using ‘regedit’ command
  • Go to Keyboard Layout registry entry. Follow the path given in the below image
  • This node contains the information for keyboard layouts installed on the machine.
  • check for all the entries under this node.
  • For me, the issue was that it contained one more entry at sequence ‘3’, with some random number.
  • In such a case, remove that entry. Take a backup of entry, to be on the safer side.
  • You can find all possible Keyboard Layout registry entries listed here

Solution 3— Ensure the right Keyboard Layout is Selected

Another solution is to ensure that Windows has the right keyboard layout set.

  • Look for the ‘ENG’ word in the bottom right corner of the taskbar.
  • Click on this. It shows all the installed keyboard layouts.
  • Ensure that the right layout is selected.
  • A wrong layout can change the action of keys.

Solution 4— Use Keyboard Troubleshooter

  • Open Settings
  • Search for Troubleshoot
  • Select Additional Troubleshooter in the right side window
  • Run Keyboard troubleshooter
  • The troubleshooter can fix the basic issues with the keyboard

Note: This step did not help in case of registry corruption.

Solution 4 — Update Keyboard Driver

  • Open Device Manager
  • Look for the ‘Keyboards’ node
  • Expand the node for specific keyboard
  • Right-click to update the driver

This step will fix the issue for the keyboard driver.

Again this step won’t help in the registry corruption issue.

Closing

It is problematic when a regular update from the operating system causes such an annoying change in the system. Especially when there is no defined path to fix these. It can spoil many hours or days, as happened to me.

I hope this write-up will help someone to save that time.

Hoping, the Windows team will do better in testing the releases. Although random issues were faced earlier too after the Windows update.
